Swim Tests at Eagle Ranch

Swimming Competency Test - This test must be completed by all boys before they can participate in activities that involve water more than knee-deep. The result of this test will place the trailman in one of three classifications:

  • Swimmer - May swim in all designated swim areas:

    • Swim 100 yards without stops and with at least one sharp turn

    • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming

    • Strongly swim 75 yards using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl.

    • Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke

  • Beginner - May only swim in the shallow end, or where he can touch bottom:

    • In water that he can touch the bottom, jump in and fully submerge his head

    • Swim 25 feet on the surface without considerable strain, touching the bottom, holding the wall or lane lines, etc.

  • Non-Swimmer - Must stay in the shallow end and utilize a Coast Guard approved PFD when swimming. Must have an adult aquatics Supervising Adult or Lifeguard in his craft when boating:

    • Cannot complete either of the above swimming tests without considerable strain, touching the bottom, walls etc.
